At an undisclosed location on Barra there is a small pinery that has been growing pineapple plants for over two years.

Today, the first two pineapples to be produced on Barra ever will be auctioned off in Buth Bharraigh, the Castlebay community shop,  at 12 noon.

This is a massive achievement for the crofter who has diversified into pineapples, says the local producers group, Beairteas Bharraigh which translates as the Wealth of Barra.

As yet the undisclosed crofter is not sure how many he will be able to produce in a year but is hoping that it will add significantly to his crofting income.

Barra islanders have been asked: "Please come along and see the pineapples for yourself.

"Take a selfie with them for £2 and even bid on the very first of their kind on Barra"

Auction: 12 Noon Today - streamed live on Facebook
