A £54,500 award will guarantee the continuation of year-round quality live events for audiences in Skye and Lochalsh.
In last month’s round of Creative Scotland Open Project Funding awards, community-led performing arts promotion charity Skye Events for All (SEALL) was awarded funding from the National Lottery to support its year-round touring programme and continue its reputation for excellence in bringing world-class performing arts in music, theatre, dance, literature, comedy and children’s shows to venues across the Island.
Based in offices at the Gaelic College, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Sleat, in the south of Skye, SEALL is the largest rural touring promoter in the Highlands and also produces the Fèis an Eilein, the Skye Festival, which takes place between the months of July and August each year.
SEALL’s work has been endorsed by the Scottish Government as a cultural “inspiration.”
SEALL’s creative director, Duncan MacInnes, said: “We are delighted with this year’s award which will fund 40 per cent of our programme costs and allow us to bring the best quality shows to more venues across Skye and Lochalsh as well as sustain, enhance and improve the delivery of our service.
“We are committed to striving for cultural excellence in our work year-round and to create accessible experiences in top quality performing arts to as many communities as we can, no matter how remote.
“We also recognise the need to nurture and support our local musical talent. Some of Scotland’s finest trad musicians began their journeys on SEALL’s stages. We make sure our young musicians perform opening sessions for the big names in Scots trad. This not only gives them their first experience of playing to a large audience but also a chance to meet and perform alongside their musical heroes.”
Until this year, SEALL events have taken place mainly at venues in Sleat. The Creative Scotland award will allow the programme to reach the wider communities of Skye and Lochalsh."
Karen Dick, Place, Partnerships & Communities Officer at Creative Scotland said: “SEALL expertly balances high quality performances showcasing and nurturing local talent, with a focus on programming which highlights place and languages. The benefits which this cultural activity brings to community life is being enjoyed by Skye residents and visitors alike.”
