Tougher action will be taken on those littering from vehicles.

Last week Environment Secretary Roseanna Cunningham announced that the new measures – making it an offence to drop litter from vehicles – will be included as part of a future Circular Economy Bill.

Kate Forbes MSP believes it is important that motorists understand a ‘throwaway culture’, which can blight some of the most beautiful spots in the Highlands, is unacceptable.

The MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch said: “This is very welcome news for my constituency, which has seen a significant increase in roadside littering.

“Sadly, some people are happy for their own vehicles to be spotlessly clean by chucking their litter out the window for somebody else to tidy up.

“These changes tighten up and toughen up the legislation to clamp down on such thoughtless actions.

“I hope we’ll start to see a change to roadside verges – and soon – particularly as we move into the summer tourist season.”
